The House Beautiful Real Style Awards spotlight the products that earn a permanent place in our homes. Chosen by our editors for their exceptional design, quality and performance, each winner stands out for making everyday living both easier and more beautiful. The dining room winners showcase the best in style and functionality. From statement serveware to essential hosting pieces, these are the designs that make every meal, gathering and celebration feel a little more special.
BEST SIDEBOARD: Tobia sideboard, Westwing
Westwing
Burl wood is having a real moment, and this sideboard from Westwing, a design-led European brand that launched in the UK this year, celebrates the distinctive finish in a big way. Inside, eight separate compartments offer up plenty of room for all your plates, glassware and other hosting essentials.
Every dining table deserves a showstopping centrepiece, and this tall vase is pure theatre. We love the organic pattern, which comes from rolling molten glass in powdered pigment – the blown effect is beautiful with or without an arrangement of freshly cut stems.
BEST CUTLERY: Heritage cutlery set, John Lewis & Partners
House Beautiful/Malcolm Menzies
There’s something ever so slightly ‘French bistro’ about this classic cutlery, which scores highly for the glossy flash of dark blue it brings to place settings. Made from stainless steel with ceramic handles, this set is dishwasher-safe and works just as well for everyday breakfasts as it does for dinner parties.
If you’re hanging a light above your dining table, it’s got to be beautiful and, for us, this antique brass design takes the crown. Inspired by flower petals, it’s the latest ‘look at me’ ceiling lamp from quintessentially British brand Oka.
BEST GLASSWARE: Chunky stem wine glass, George Home at Asda
George Home at Asda
This glass is a perfect example of what the design team at George Home do well – it looks and feels a lot more expensive than it really is. With a chunky, tinted stem and tall bowl, the modern shape lends itself to pre-dinner cocktails as much as it does wine.
Circular tables enhance a room’s flow, making them ideal for smaller spaces and open-plan layouts. This design combines a trendy fluted base with a shape that makes sitting down for a meal more democratic, as there’s no ‘bad’ seat. Plus, there’s always room to squeeze in an extra guest.
BEST TABLE LINEN : Madeline placemat, Anthropologie
House Beautiful/Malcolm Menzies
Scallop edges bring an instant sense of whimsy – this placemat, made from crisp cotton and available in four different colour combinations, is a case in point. Pretty enough to work by itself, the design also looks gorgeous layered with a cloth as part of a more decorative tablescape.
BEST EXTENDABLE DINING TABLE: Mid-Century Modern extending dining table, West Elm
West Elm
Extending tables are only as good as their mechanism. This one is simple to use and wins points for leaving the surface perfectly even, essential when piling on sharing platters! Made with sustainably sourced eucalyptus wood, it also wins Fairtrade approval.
BEST DINING CHAIR: Layla dining chair, Atkin & Thyme
House Beautiful/Malcolm Menzies
Inspired by mid-century design, this handcrafted piece is available in seven different fabrics. Our winner is the rich Rust Velvet, which works beautifully against the natural grain of its mango-wood frame. As a bonus, it also features built-in floor glides to protect against scuffs and scrapes.
BEST SERVING PLATTER: Celia platter in Raspberry, Rebecca Udall
Rebecca Udall
Formed using traditional techniques in Portugal, this platter is handpainted by skilled female artisans. While undoubtedly an investment, don’t save it for best – use it to tumble up leafy salads, load with roasted vegetables and serve up a generous assortment of cheese and crackers.
BEST TABLECLOTH: Cora stripe tablecloth, Secret Linen Store
Secret Linen Store
Bringing colour, pattern and texture in one fell swoop, we love that this striped design does most of the tablescaping by itself. Made from 100 per cent high-quality European linen, it looks best when it’s left unironed – so that’s one less job to do ahead of your next dinner party.
With rustic speckling and an almost imperceptible wobble to it, this ochre-yellow dinner plate beautifully captures the ‘perfectly imperfect’ look that stoneware is prized for. Introduce as a sunny addition to your existing crockery or invest in the matching side plates, bowls and mugs.
EDITOR’S PICK: Ruffle sconce, Poesy Ceramics at Etsy
Etsy
‘With a glazed finish and gently ruffled edges, this ceramic sconce is part mood lighting and part wall art. It catches the eye even when the taper candle inside is unlit and, once it is, brings all the glow to your dining setup without taking up any space on your tabletop.’ – Torri Mundell, Editor-in-Chief
