Some trends take years to gain momentum, while others are born from a simple stroke of genius. The viral calla lily candleholder falls firmly into the latter camp. Now, with a chrome version arriving on the high street, the floral trend is showing real staying power well into autumn.
Created by florist MayBloom (@maybloom.studio) as part of an autumnal tablescape in burgundy, plum, soft blush, warm cream and mossy green, the striking arrangement quickly caught attention. One commenter expressed their love for the creation and MayBloom quickly followed up with a reel showing the simple steps behind the display, which has now racked up more than 1.5 million views.
H&M was quick to respond to the popularity of the idea, translating the look into a permanent piece of decor. Its £14.99 flower-shaped candlestick means the sculptural display can now be enjoyed year-round, without having to track down fresh calla lilies or worry about them being in season.
The original idea looks rather simple: insert a slim, detachable candleholder into the stem of a calla lily, then secure a dinner candle into the flower itself (or simply screw the removable top back on). But the florist at MayBloom admits, ‘the real flower version takes quite a bit of time and patience to assemble.’ In her original demonstration video, she explained that she actually ruined several calla lilies while recreating the process – proof that this is perhaps one of those DIYs that looks easier than it is.
When we asked MayBloom whether she’d be buying the H&M version any time soon, she admitted, ‘I don’t plan to buy them as I love my real flower candleholders.’ For larger events, however, she can see the appeal, saying the H&M version ‘might actually be a more practical option since they’re ready to use’.
So, while we love the idea of making the real thing for a special occasion, the H&M version certainly takes the faff out of recreating the look whenever you fancy it.
Spoilt for choice, H&M also offers a taller candleholder (£19.99) in chrome and black aluminium and even a chrome wall sconce (£19.99). We’re tempted to style several together and dot along a Christmas table, where the sculptural blooms would make quite the statement.
