Pooky, a UK-based lighting brand, was one of the first to offer mix-and-match lamps and decorative shades. But the company also led the charge – pun intended – on wireless lighting, with portable lamps that have transformed our experience of the garden and every dark corner of our home.
‘Yes, we are hyper-focused on lighting,’ admits Jo Plant, Pooky’s chief creative director. ‘Good lighting isn't just a functional necessity; it creates the warmth and atmosphere that draws you into a room.’
Which product would you choose as your favourite lighting innovation?
‘From the past, I’d nominate Murano glass chandeliers from the 1400s! And Verner Panton’s Flowerpot is effortlessly cool – he was a trailblazer who truly understood the power of colour and form.
'From Pooky, I’d highlight our Scoon lights: versatile cordless wall lights and uplighters that can showcase artwork or dark corners. Because they are cordless, you can place them literally anywhere.’
What is a totally impractical piece of furniture you’d love to invent?
‘Outdoor chandeliers. I’m working on it...’
Jo's tips for lighting that will transform your space
- Layer with wall lights that throw illumination both up and down. This creates instant drama and carves out beautiful focal points that didn't exist during the day.
- Go big on a statement piece, such as an oversized pendant or chandelier that’s striking enough to create a sense of theatre even when switched off.
- Master the technical details. Look for bulbs with a colour temperature of between 2400K and 2700K for a warm, cosy glow. And crucially, put your lighting on a dimmer switch whenever possible.
