HGTV is hoping to turn back the clock with its new series, Totally ‘90s House. Hosted by sitcom star Jaleel White (who played Urkel on Family Matters), the show is a design competition that challenges some of the most iconic ‘90s television and music stars to remodel an outdated home while keeping its nostalgic spirit intact. The cast members include Sabrina the Teenage Witch star Melissa Joan Hart, Full House’s Jodi Sweeten, and 90210’s Brian Austin Green.
From honey oak flooring to rag-rolled walls, ‘90s-era home trends are…divisive to say the least. But they have been re-emerging thanks to the ever-churning trend wheel.
“Everybody loves the ‘90s again,” White said in a press release. “The fits are back, the playlists are on repeat, and kids who weren’t even born yet are binge-watching the shows we made famous. But while some things from the ‘90s are timeless...some of y’all never got the memo that the decade ended. We asked America to show us the homes still living in the past, and the response was incredible.”
Split into two teams, the famed faces will search the country for homes “stuck in the ‘90s” to be modernized into nostalgia-inspired dream homes. The group that manages to balance modern living styles with iconic ‘90s-era charm will win $25,000, to be donated to their chosen charity. Set to premiere on August 26, 2026, the show will follow the massive renovations over six weekly episodes.
In addition to its ‘90s icon competitors, the show will also feature a notable roster of guest judges. Reality TV star and member of the boy band 98 Degrees, Drew Lachey, will oversee bathroom designs, Trading Spaces star Paige Davis will take on dining and living rooms, and artist and designer Jonathan Adler will get to have the last say, evaluating both projects entirely and ultimately deciding which team wins the competition.
So what makes a home “totally ‘90s?” Design hallmarks of the era include overstuffed, rounded furniture, mirrored closets, and lots of chintz. They’ll be riding a fine line between trendy and tacky—a challenge indeed!
