3 min readIf your home has a mostly modern aesthetic, adding antiques is a reliable way to soften the edges and add a bit of character. But it takes practice to mix design styles in a way that feels just right, so it's often safer to do one thing really well.
While an antique sofa or dresser can be intimidating, both in scale and presence, small storage doesn't come with the same risk. An old butcher block or bedside table is small enough that it never overwhelms the rest of your scheme, and there's little chance of it looking like two different houses colliding.
These five antiques are affordable, easy to move around, and useful enough to justify the hunt.
Where to Look
Facebook Marketplace and eBay are best for collection-only bargains, where sellers often don't know what they have and price accordingly. Antique resellers and marketplaces such as Vinterior and Selency will have more of the good stuff with less of the trawling.
Search by function or shape and keep it general. “Glazed cabinet,” “writing table,” “kitchen trolley,” or “milking stool” will unearth more treasures than specifying an era or design style.
What to Check Before You Buy
- Hinges and locks: Missing hardware is fine and cheap to replace.
- Damage: Check for musty smells and look underneath for signs of active woodworm, damp, or fresh repairs. Warped doors and major wobbles are usually more hassle than they're worth to fix.
- Cosmetic marks: Marks are part of the appeal, especially on rustic stools and butcher’s blocks, so don't be overly prescriptive with superficial condition.
What to Choose
Small Display Cabinets
A small glazed cabinet turns everyday storage into part of the decor. They give books, ceramics, and little collected objects a place to live, freeing up your shelves or coffee table, and they’re especially useful in alcoves or next to a sofa in lieu of a side table.
Look at old shop fittings for extra nostalgia—bonus design points if they still have some original lettering.
Top tip: Your accessories don’t have to align with the era of your cabinet—the mix of old and new in such a small area will feel subtle.
Desks
Desks have become something of a modern-day necessity, but high street options can feel frustratingly formal and functional. Antiques are usually far more handsome, slim-legged, and often in lovely dark woods that are rough and rich in patina.
For small spaces, look for writing tables and little bureaus that fold shut to hide the clutter. They're so compact that they could sit on a landing or in a spare room, with a small chair or stool tucked neatly underneath.
Bedside Tables
An antique bedside table is an easy and affordable choice for modern bedrooms. In tight spaces, search for tray-top tables, little chests, sewing tables or single nightstands rather than waiting for a matching pair—the goal is for it all to feel relaxed and slightly undone, so a mismatch is perfectly acceptable.
If the height is slightly too low for your bed, a tall lamp on a stack of books can help.
A Trolley or Butcher's Block
Two- or three-tier trolleys on castors were originally built to wheel tea and drinks between rooms, but they come in handy in a small kitchen where worktop space is scarce. They can hold pots and pans, a fruit bowl, or a tray of glasses, and can roll out of the way when you need the extra room.
Look for old factory carts, painted prep tables, and butcher blocks at reclamation yards and vintage markets. Always check the wheels still turn and the tiers are solid, but finish is less important—a coat of wax can bring tired oak back to life without stripping the color.
Top tip: For food prep, the top must be scrubbed, sanded if needed, and finished with a food-safe oil.
Stools
An antique stool is small, useful, and often much cheaper than a statement chair, which makes it a clever entry point for vintage furniture. In this fabulous bathroom, the worn wooden stool adds some welcome contrast against the marble, with just enough surface for a towel, book, or candle.
Look for milking stools, workshop stools, chapel stools, and simple farmhouse pieces with sturdy legs.
