  • Property Brother Jonathan Scott took to Instagram to offer his top tips on keeping a clean kitchen. In his post, he highlighted often-forgotten areas that need regular upkeep.
  • For each area, Scott offered a chemical-free solution—for example, he replaces chemical solutions with vinegar and cleaning tabs with lemon wedges.
  • In his video, Scott also highlights important tips to avoid having fruit flies in your garbage disposal.

From handwashing to food prep to dishwashing dregs, our sinks are arguably the workhorses of the entire kitchen, and Jonathan Scott wants us to start treating them with a little more respect. The Property Brothers star recently took to Instagram to share his best practices for keeping your sinks shiny and smell-free.

In his first tip, Scott offered up a surefire solution for eliminating fruit flies, which always seem to congregate around the sink if we’ve been letting the dishes pile up for a bit too long. Using a glass, a splash of apple cider vinegar, and a piece of paper as a makeshift funnel, you can easily catch and trap fruit flies. Scott attests that you could even catch “hundreds” of them with this simple hack.

Next up is a quick tip on getting your sink’s garbage disposal to smell, well, a bit less garbage-y. Scott suggests tossing half of a lemon down the chute for a quick, easy, and chemical-free solution. But, if you find that the scent still lingers, that means it’s probably time to give your disposal’s in-sink seal a good scrub.

Once you’ve evicted the stench, Scott wants you to be mindful about what you throw down the hatch in the future. Anything that can clump together can cause your garbage disposal to get seriously backed up, so eggshells, coffee grounds, and even breads and pastries should head straight for the garbage (or compost) bin instead.

And finally, your dishes are only as clean as the faucet that washes them. When was the last time you cleaned yours? Instead of reaching for yet another potent cleaning product, Scott says cleaning it with white vinegar will do the job just as well. Here’s his go-to method: Remove your faucet’s filter (if you’re able to) and give it a good scrub. Then, fill a plastic sandwich bag with enough white vinegar to submerge your faucet’s head. Let it sit for 10 to 20 minutes total. After it’s soaked, you’ll want to run the water for a bit, to let any grime and loose particles run off before you get back to your regular kitchen chores.
