Drew Scott knows a thing or two about designing a gorgeous home. As one half of HGTV’s Property Brothers duo, he’s had a hand in over 400 home renovations. But it’s not just the aesthetic that matters when it comes to putting together the perfect home; designs need to be both good-looking and functional. Luckily, the Scott bros know how to strike a balance.
Kitchens, in particular, can be complicated. Despite best intentions, they tend to get chaotic, brimming with produce, appliances, and foot traffic; it can be hard to rein in the space. But fear not: Scott took to Instagram to share his top kitchen design and organization hacks for a chic, clutter-free kitchen.
For starters, Scott advises keeping your countertops and tiles clean by installing a pull-out cutting board directly over the trash bin. It’s even better if you can get a custom board designed with a waste hole. This custom kitchen hack saves you time and effort, so you can simply chop, prep, and clear in one station.
Scott also wants you to ditch your fruit bowl for produce drawers. This gives your fruits and veggies a home without compromising your counter space, so you can focus on curating a display that adds character instead of combating the endless fruit flies in your kitchen.
Next up, Scott included not one, but two pet-friendly renovations in his roundup. First, he suggested getting a pot filler fitted into a low-sitting cabinet space over slotted bowls to create a “doggy water fountain,” and a base pull-out featuring hooks for leashes and a pet food storage bin. In his opinion, your kitchen should cater to all of your family members.
And finally, though it may seem like a common feature, Scott highlighted the importance of a well-organized utensil drawer to keep clutter (and clanking) to a minimum.
