During his time on Amazing Spaces, George Clarke has seen his fair share of creative inventions. Now, the architect has revealed a clever space-saving idea he uses in his own home.

In his new series, George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces: First Home, George meets people finding unconventional ways to buy their first home and get on the property ladder.

The show offers plenty of inspiration for small-space dwellers, but during our conversation with George, we discovered he’s been working on some space-saving ideas of his own — including one involving the stools in his garden studio.

George has flatpack stools that attach to his studio walls when they’re not in use. Each part has magnets, so the stools can be disassembled and stored as panels on the wall.

'There are panels of plywood on my wall, on magnets, and you pull off one bit, which is one leg. You pull off the other bit, which is another leg, and you pull off the other bit, which is top, and you build a little stool,' George explains.

‘If I’ve got people over, they can sit on the stool. Then, in three seconds, I can take it apart. It’s flatpack furniture on your wall: you take the pieces down, clip them together and you’ve got a stool in three seconds. When you don’t need it, it goes back on the wall.’
