Listen, I adore real greenery. There is nothing better than walking into a room with a thriving fiddle-leaf fig or a gorgeous vase of fresh branches. (I’ve seen our former style director Robert Rufino do legitimate magical things with an $8 bouquet of Trader Joe’s flowers.)
But I also know myself. I know my schedule. And I know that if a plant requires more than occasional primping and watering, we have a problem.
That’s why I’ve become increasingly open to faux greenery, especially as the quality has gotten shockingly good. (Need proof? Check out our favorite low-maintenance houseplants and compare.) But even the best fake stems can give themselves away if you just plop them in a vase and call it a day.
For years, I’ve been collecting my favorite faux plant tricks from stylists. They’ve completely changed the way I think about decorating with artificial plants. And once you start using them, you might never go back to real again.
The secret to making fake plants look real isn’t about splurging on an expensive brand—it’s all in the styling. Stop treating faux plants like objects and start treating them like living things. Ironically, that’s what makes them feel alive. Here are the four foolproof secrets that I’ve tested myself that always make artificial plants look real.
Secret 1: Trim the Stems
One of the biggest giveaways that a plant is fake? Perfect symmetry. Nature doesn’t do perfection. Real branches bend. Leaves vary. Stems grow unevenly. So if every stem in your faux arrangement is the same height, your brain immediately registers that something is off.
To remedy this, use scissors or wire cutters to trim the faux stems to slightly different lengths.
The goal isn’t chaos—it’s natural variation. Think about the last bouquet you bought. It wasn’t a perfect dome. It had movement. Height. Personality. Your faux arrangement should too.

Secret 2: Add Water
This feels almost embarrassingly obvious, but it may be the smartest trick on this list. If you’re displaying faux stems in a transparent vase, make sure to add water to the vase.
When you look at a floral arrangement, one of the first subconscious things you register is whether it’s sitting in water. An empty glass vase with lush, alive-looking stems gives everything away immediately.
Note: You should change the water over time, because stagnant water will get disgusting. But the whole ruse is a small effort with a huge payoff.
Secret 3: Un-liven Them
Here’s something I’d never considered until it was pointed out to me: real plants get tired. It’s just a fact of life. Not every branch gets equal hydration. Some leaves droop. Some stems bend slightly lower than others. That imperfection is what makes them believable.
So instead of fluffing every branch upward like it’s performing for Broadway, gently bend a few stems downward. You want subtle asymmetry. A little droop creates that magical “wait... is this real?” moment.
Secret 4: Hide the Base
This might be my favorite trick because it solves the most suspicious part of most fake plants: the bottom. Usually, the base is where things fall apart. Foam, visible plastic, weird glue situations: These aren’t fooling anybody.
The fix is fake moss. It instantly disguises anything questionable happening below the stems. Simply layer it over the top of the planter or vase base, and suddenly the entire arrangement looks elevated, intentional, and far more convincing.
Bonus: It adds texture, which every great room needs.
