Whether you’ve stumbled upon this article because you want to treat yourself to a flower subscription service, or you just remembered it’s your cousin’s birthday and you need to rustle up a bouquet of quality blooms stat – welcome!
Fresh cut flowers are a secret weapon when it comes to design, bringing an instant pop of colour to any room, but with so many flower delivery services out there – and given their delicate nature – it’s important to know your blooms are going to arrive safely and ready to flourish...
That’s why we decided to put online florists to the test, to find those that can be relied upon to deliver show-stopping arrangements time and time again. Read on for gift-ready blooms, stylish houseplants and the best flower subscription services.
First of all, deep breath. The good news is that several of the flower delivery services we tested offer next-day delivery nationwide. However, the cut off time for ordering ranges from noon to 8pm, so speed is of the essence if it’s past lunchtime.
For same-day delivery, we’d like to direct you to FlowerBx and Appleyard London if you’re based in London. If you’re outside the capital, tried and tested pick, Floom, delivers same-day nationwide and the winning supermarket, Waitrose, also has same-day options. Again, there are cut-off times – usually around 2pm – so it may not be possible if you’re trying to place a late afternoon order.
Why yes, you can. If you’re looking to gift a houseplant – or you’ve decided that you’re finally ready to love again after the tragic demise of that rubber tree last summer – we’ve got those covered too. Not only do they tend to be cheaper than bouquets, but with the right love and care, they’ll also last a lot longer than cut flowers.
If you are gifting a houseplant, be sure to consider the recipient’s home and lifestyle. Do they have plenty of natural light or would it be better to opt for a plant that’s happiest in shade? Are they away a lot and therefore need a low-lift plant baby? Do they have pets? One of the plant delivery services we tested, Patch Plants, has plenty of handy filters so you can make sure you’re choosing the right one for the space.
Whether you’re looking to stop your tulips from drooping, or want to make your peonies last a few more precious days, there are several simple steps you can take.
The first happens before you buy: look for bouquets that contain flowers still in bud. These will open once they arrive, making your arrangement last longer.
Next, check for any care instructions. This may sound obvious, but some plants, such as roses, come with guard petals left on. These protective outer petals don't always look the prettiest, but can be removed on arrival. Care instructions should cover this, and will detail how to use any accompanying flower food too.
Before placing your flowers in a clean vase filled with fresh water, trim the stems. Around an inch, cutting at a diagonal angle is best; this gives them more surface area to absorb water. Remove any leaves that will sit below the waterline too.
Then refresh your flowers' water every few days, and trim their stems by an extra one centimetre. Finally, place them away from radiators and direct sunlight. This should prevent them from drying out too quickly.
With houseplants, there's no one-size-fits-all approach. Check their care instructions to make sure you understand their water and light requirements.
We enlisted the help of more than 100 readers and sent out bouquets and plants from 22 different flower delivery services. Each lucky recipient shared their experience with us, feeding back on their gift's arrival, packaging, overall look and freshness.
We also ordered one bouquet and plant from each service, to assess the website and ease of ordering. We looked at the range of filters, selection of products and delivery options available online. Once the bouquets arrived, we timed how long they remained fresh for, too.
These are the ones we're turning to for a colourful, flower-filled home.
