9 valuable garden plants thieves are targeting, from peonies to lemon trees

These common varieties are worth a pretty penny

From Japanese maples worth thousands of pounds to peonies that take years to establish, some garden plants are far more valuable than they first appear.

According to new research from Allianz UK, these sought-after varieties are increasingly attracting the attention of thieves. In a survey of 2,000 homeowners, 67 per cent said they had experienced a plant being stolen from their garden, doorstep or allotment, while nearly half (46 per cent) believe plant theft is increasing in their local area. While any plant can be stolen, some are particularly desirable due to their value, rarity or the years of care required to reach maturity.

In light of Allianz's findings, British ethnobotanist, presenter and garden designer James Wong has identified nine sought-after flowers and trees commonly found in UK gardens that may require a little extra protection.

Bonsai

Peonies

Lemon tree
