After the internet’s obsession with the ‘big light’, another lighting debate is taking over social media. A viral TikTok has ignited a fresh discussion about whether warm or cool lighting creates the best atmosphere indoors.

TikTok user @pinweeno has amassed 5.5 million views on a video titled ‘the lighting that ruins everything’. While the creator was originally comparing overhead lighting with smaller lamps, the conversation quickly shifted to another surprisingly divisive topic: lighting temperature. In the comments, viewers passionately debated whether warm or cool-toned bulbs are best.

As it turns out, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer — the right choice depends on the room, its purpose and the atmosphere you want to create. Below, we break down which lighting type works best in each space, and how to style it.

Which rooms should use warm lighting?

The most restful of the two, warm lighting (that’s your 2700K to 3000K range) has a buttery yellow glow that instantly makes a room feel welcoming.

‘It’s basically candlelight in a bulb, which is why warm lighting should be the go-to for bedrooms and living rooms,’ says Jo Plant, chief creative officer at Pooky. ‘If you want to hunker down and feel properly cosy, warm is the way.’

Layer lighting through table lamps, floor lamps, and dimmable fixtures to build depth and gently shape the mood of the room, making it feel more intimate and inviting rather than overly bright. Varying the height and intensity of each light source helps avoid harshness – instead creating a soft, even glow.

Then, pair these elements with tactile materials like brushed velvet and bouclé, which subtly catch and diffuse the light, adding warmth and softness to the overall look. Ground the scheme with warm-toned woods such as oak, walnut, or teak to bring in a natural richness. Together, these layers of light and texture create a cocooning yet cohesive space.

Which rooms should use cool-toned lighting?

For the areas dedicated to tasks, cool-toned lighting (up in the 4000K to 5000K territory) will improve visibility and sharpen contrast.

‘This mimics daylight, which is brilliant for making us feel a bit more sparky and focused,’ explains Jo. ‘I always recommend it for the practical spots such as kitchens, bathrooms, or your desk – aka anywhere you actually need to see what you’re doing without squinting!”

It works particularly well when paired with clean lines and lighter colour palettes – think whites, creams, and soft pastels – as these will help amplify the crisp quality of light. Keeping the overall look pared-back will allow the brightness to feel intentional, rather than overwhelming.

To maintain that balance, opt for controlled, directional lighting such as under-cabinet strips, focused task lighting, or discreet spotlights. This will ensure the light falls exactly where it’s needed, enhancing function. The result? A space that feels sharp and modern, without tipping into anything too clinical.
