We’re all for clever, fuss-free ways to refresh a home, and one low-effort decorating trick can give any room an instant glow-up: simply look up.

Lampshades – whether on pendant lights, floor lamps or table lamps – can completely change how a room looks and feels, and designers say they’re one of the easiest design details to tackle first for an instant upgrade.

A simple lampshade swap can instantly enhance both natural and artificial light, helping rooms feel brighter, softer and more considered without any major effort.

‘Unlike many homeware purchases, lampshades offer long-term flexibility, making them increasingly appealing to budget-conscious and sustainability-minded consumers,’ says Jo Plant, chief creative officer at Pooky. ‘Rotating lampshades seasonally allows households to brighten darker spaces without new fixtures, introduce colour without repainting, and shift the mood of a room in minutes.’

Lampshades are far more budget-friendly than big-ticket pieces like furniture or rugs, with styles starting from as little as £15 – even for larger designs – and often much less secondhand. They’re also incredibly versatile, making it easy to move them between rooms and switch up the look of your space in minutes without committing to a full redesign.

How to pick and style lampshades for maximum impact

By investing in a small collection of interchangeable lampshades, you can easily adapt a room for different seasons without redecorating, while also experimenting with trends without the long-term commitment. It’s a simple way to refresh your space on demand, creating multiple looks from the same core setup with minimal effort.

‘When choosing a lampshade, proportion is key – a shade that is too small can make a lamp feel awkward, while an oversized one can overwhelm the piece,’ says Jordana Ashkenazi, design director and founder of Element One House. ‘It should feel balanced with the base, typically around two-thirds of its height, to create a cohesive look.’

Material also plays an important role. ‘Linen and cotton shades diffuse light softly, creating a warm, ambient glow, while darker or more structured shades direct light and add a more dramatic, layered effect,’ Jordana adds.

To enhance the effect even further, consider switching your light bulbs to adjust the mood. Warm whites (around 2700K–3000K) create a soft, cosy glow, while cooler whites (4000K–5000K) feel brighter and more like natural daylight — ideal for making a space feel fresh, airy and energised.

When it comes to styling, lampshades are a great opportunity to add depth, texture and personality. ‘They can be matched to upholstery or wallpaper for a cohesive scheme or used to introduce contrast through subtle pattern or detailing,’ says Jordana.

Whether you choose a simple shade or a statement piece, a well-chosen and placed lampshade can truly elevate and refresh your home’s design.
