We’re not just talking about installing extra shelves, decluttering, or adding a new garage door. We mean complete transformations. Imagine converting your garage into a dining room, lounge, or office space. As you explore the designer tips below, you'll discover how to repurpose your garage into a space that you’ll use more than ever, potentially increasing your home's resale value. Let these garage renovation ideas inspire you to create a mini home away from home.
Who hasn't dreamed of turning their garage into a guest house? Contractor Steve Ford (who's also Leanne Ford's brother) made that wish a reality. While this garage renovation isn't the typical one that you'd find attached to or even detached from a house, this once-warehouse was transformed into an entire home that has everything you could need.
If you can't transform your entire garage into an apartment, consider converting it into a guest suite. This gives you a chance to experiment with your interior style. You could go for a minimalist look, like Steve Ford did, or try something entirely out of your comfort zone.
Choose warm materials, textures, and colors, like in this space by Elizabeth Georgantas, for your garage renovation to create a cozy den. This is an extremely versatile garage renovation idea, giving you the option to turn it into a home theater of sorts, or even a reading nook.
When your garage is too small to fit your car anymore, turn it into a personal studio space. The homeowner of this property is also an artist, so creating an area separate from the main house to work was such an obvious solution. "The stained concrete floor is perfect for standing up to spills plus wear and tear," Seth Ballard of Ballard & Mensua Architecture adds.
Running your business out of your home is great for your commute time, but not so ideal when it comes to separating work and the rest of your life. However, if you have the means to transform your garage into an office space, you should definitely do so. Seth Ballard's client runs her own landscape architecture firm, so he redesigned the space to be the headquarters of the firm, taking inspiration from the Spanish Colonial vibe of the main house.
Homeowners turn a portion of their garages into bar spaces all the time, but not many of them come close to the beauty of this lounge and bar by the TKS Design Group. "This extra detached garage lounge space was built for entertaining and includes multiple seating areas, a large bar with a custom 'kegorator', and built-in mirrored bar back," Susan Klimala, principal designer of the interior firm, explains. "Deep greens and teals with velvet and brass accents give it a moody vibe. We kept the garage door intact to open up the space to the back patio."
Rather than completely transform your garage into a different space, make it a multipurpose area that can house your cars and serve as an office. This creative solution by Seth Ballard shows that if you have high enough ceilings, you can fit in multiple areas that make your life easier.

Turn It Into a Home Gym

Anyone who lifts weights or does any sort of exercise daydreams about having a home gym in their backyard or basement, so turn that dream into a reality with this garage renovation idea. Designer Sarah Snouffer of Third Street Architecture transformed her clients' garage into a snazzy workout space complete with an elliptical, hand weights, and a TV.
In the same home gym above, Sarah Snouffer decided to put a sauna into the space so her clients could sweat it out after their workout. Even if your garage renovation doesn't include a full gym, a sauna will make all the difference in the colder months.

Make a Playroom for the Kids
Gordon Beall
Give your kids a playroom that can easily age with them when you're considering garage renovation ideas. Designer Darryl Carter added swings and a basketball hoop to this hangout area for his clients' growing boys. The design is so versatile and can easily be updated if they want something more mature as they get older.
Everyone uses their garage for storage, but you can remodel it to make that its primary purpose. The team at LH. Designs created a sleek wall storage solution to hold toys and activities for the whole family. They also turned it into a mini playroom with a chalkboard wall and a rug on the floor.

Embrace Your Green Thumb
David A. Land
Plant parents: this one's for you. Rather than use your garage to house your vehicles, use it instead to hold your pots, soil, seeds, and any other equipment you need to keep your garden in tip-top shape. This charming gardening space for designer Michelle Adams by Tuff Shed keeps everything at arm's reach as she works in her yard.
Rather than focus on the inside when completing her garage renovation, designer Isabel Ladd chose to put effort into the outside. By adding colorful furnishings and painting the concrete slab, the designer transformed this space into a destination. "My family uses it nearly every day in the summer—rain or shine. It is perfect when you need to step into the shade or keep food and drinks out of the sun. A TV on a swing arm allows you to enjoy TV from the pool or the seating area inside," she explains.
Outdoor dining rooms are simply one of the chicest spaces you can have on your property, so transform the garage space you no longer use into an indoor-outdoor spot to dine in. In our 2021 Whole Home, designer Jean Liu used the covered passageway that connected the garage and main house to create a casual dining area, fit with motorized retractable screens.
Storing your tools in the garage is nothing new, but don’t forget to focus on the small details during the planning stages of your garage renovation idea. For instance, the Garage Kings installed a wear- and scratch-resistant flake floor in our 2021 Whole Home to ensure it always looks pristine.
