We all have a favorite spot on the couch—you know, the ultra-cozy nook that is perfect for lounging, relaxing, and binge-watching. We spend weeks, months, even years molding the perfect perch, but what if we told you that your little spot of everyday luxury is actually impacting the quality of your sofa?

That’s right: In your effort to preserve that comfy feel, you might actually be harming the health of your furniture. Rotating your couch cushions is essential for the longevity of your furniture, and while we understand that the loss of such snugness might be distressing, the thought of having to toss the whole sofa is reason enough to heed our advice.

But how often do you really need to rotate? We asked designers for their best advice on keeping your couch feeling fresh. Read ahead for the top three factors to consider when building your sofa’s best rotating routine.

How Often Should You Rotate Your Sofa Cushions?

When scouting for the most comfortable and troublesome spot, noting frequency is key. Interior designer Louis Lin says noticing which seat is most subject to wear and tear is essential to finding the right rotating schedule.

“In most homes, everyone gravitates toward the same seat. Whether it's the corner spot for movie nights or the seat closest to the side table, those favourite seat cushions tend to compress much faster,” Lin says. Based on preference, that primetime spot should be regularly cycled on a two-week basis to preserve both function and form, according to Lin.

In addition to high frequency, Chloe Heath of Heath Interiors wants you to take a step back and consider your couch’s fill. Foam requires the least maintenance, followed by plush trillium—Heath’s personal pick—and finally luxurious down feathers, which are as supple as they are high-maintenance. Depending on what you have, your schedule can vary from flipping every few months to implementing a new bi-weekly chore. It all depends on use and the bounce-back factor. “Anytime you notice cushions not plumping back up after being sat on, it's a good time to give them a flip,” Heath says.

If you have pets, you’ll also want to consider their habits. Like humans, some furry friends favor spending their evenings cozied up like a small couch potato, and where they choose to lounge can impact more than your seat cushions.

“If you have a pet that loves to sit on the top of your back cushions, you might find yourself needing to rotate and fluff those more often,” says Johanna Lyle, founder of Jo Lyle & Co. Her pro tip for those on the market for the perfect piece: buy a couch with reversible cushions. Double the chic, double the lifecycle.

So, before you plop down for your evening downtime, you might want to take a good look at your cushions. Just a few minutes of your time can give you years on your couch.
