It’s finally getting warm outside, and the thought of relaxing with a stylish alfresco dining setup is exciting. A couple of outdoor candles will finish off your inviting garden scheme, creating a cosy atmosphere and complementing any other lighting you’ve got.
Some pretty flickering candles will make a charming finishing touch, providing a soft, subtle glow as evening draws in and adding some romantic ambience to date nights.
Are outdoor candles different from indoor candles?
Though similar, there are a couple of differences. Many outdoor candles have thicker wicks to prevent any breeze from extinguishing the flame. They're also often infused with citronella oil to repel mosquitoes, which is a bonus when you’re sitting outside.
Caring for outdoor candles
As with all candles, be sure to light yours for at least four hours the first time you use it or until it melts from edge to edge. This allows for a clean and even burn without tunnelling.
To prevent smoking, trim the wick by 3 to 6mm between uses, and always keep candles on a heat-resistant surface to avoid a fire risk or damage to your garden furniture.
If your candle has a lid, replace it after use to protect the surface from dust and preserve its fragrance.
The best outdoor candles to set the mood in your garden
From sweet floral scents to warming woody aromas, here's our pick of the best outdoor candles to burn this spring.
Abstract faces have been popular in interiors for a while now (think Jonathan Adler’s Dora Maar collection), and this candle pot gives a subtle nod to the trend. It’s simple yet chic, with a raw, unglazed finish and concrete votive that leans into the industrial look. There are 15 scents available for every taste, from spicy oud to refreshing lime and basil.
You may know Free People as a destination for boho-inspired clothes, but the fashion retailer also offers a diverse range of candles. This option is encased in a minimalist ceramic votive in a muted beige colourway for an understated, elegant vibe. It’s infused with warming cedarwood to bring a lovely richness to the scent.
With its arty Van Gogh-inspired tin, this candle is ideal for brightening up your outdoor dining table — it’ll look especially striking as a centrepiece. Its captivating design is versatile enough to enhance a muted tablescape or a more vibrant setting.
This modern candle's three wicks crackle as they burn to create a warming, fireside atmosphere – ideal for cosy evenings outdoors. Thanks to its sturdy concrete pot, it won’t tumble over in a strong wind, so it doesn’t matter too much if you leave it outside throughout the seasons.

Terracotta is a staple material in Mediterranean decor. Lean into the theme further by pairing this candle with colourful ceramic tiles and iron-wrought furniture for a romantic holiday feel. Once it's burnt down, you can reuse the pot as a small herb planter.
We’ve had Habitat’s oversized candle for over a year and it’s still going strong, with plenty of burn left to see us through spring. Lit or not, it looks pretty on a garden table with its ocean-like glaze, and the refreshing lemongrass scent transports us to balmy Mediterranean nights. However we do find it quickly blows out when there's a breeze outside, so keep it for calmer days.
We’re big fans of Diptyque home fragrance, and its outdoor range is full of gems based on its indoor favourites, so you can enjoy the heady Tubéreuse scent while dining alfresco. It's expensive, but this five-wick candle is huge and should see you through the summer and beyond.

At just under £12, this set of four candles is a bargain. They should comfortably last the rest of the spring, with a relatively long burn time of 10 hours apiece. Cleverly, the wax is poured deep within the votive to better protect the flame in windy weather. As for looks, the cheery yellow jar feels apt for sunnier days ahead.
Pop these tealights into your garden lanterns to bathe your outside area in a soft, warming glow. Soy wax is generally better for the environment than manufactured paraffin options and tends to burn longer, making this a win-win purchase.
Yankee Candle is always a reliable choice, so we’re excited to see the return of the brand's outdoor candles. Layered with crisp floral notes and a minty undertone of rosemary, this candle evokes that comforting smell on the ground after a rain shower. The lid doubles as a base, helping to prevent heat damage on delicate surfaces like glass and wood.
